NOTE! The Garmin Edge 1050, 850 and the new Edge MTB with the newest software versions from v28.20 onwards do not work with the old Garmin MTB trail map. For these devices you need to use the new version of the trail map. The new version also works on older Garmin devices, but bear in mind that there is still fairly little experience with it.

A winter version of the new map version is also available, matching the winter view of Trailmap's default map. Both the summer and winter versions also handle dark mode.

A version of the MTB trail map is also available for Garmin devices, including sports watches and bike computers. The map requires a relatively new sports watch or bike computer, but it also works on some older Garmin handheld GPS devices.

On newer Garmin devices it's worth downloading the map of the whole of Finland — it fits into their memory easily. For older Garmin devices there are maps of nine different areas. No new areas are being made.

Newer Garmin devices support several maps at once, older ones only one at a time. In the latter case you'll have to replace the map already on the device with the MTB trail map. Save the original map somewhere safe using the instructions below.

The list below starts with the newest Garmin map version (see the NOTE! in the heading), then the older-style "normal" img map files. Below those there are separate versions of the maps that contain only trails and cycle paths, with no other map elements. The latter versions are suitable for use together with, for example, the NLS topographic maps on those Garmin devices that support overlapping map layers. You can download the NLS topographic maps for Garmin from the kartat.hylly.org service.

Besides Garmin devices, the same version of the MTB trail map can be used in some smartphone apps, at least in OruxMaps and Locus Map, giving you an offline map that doesn't require a network connection to use.

The map files are updated every night with new OpenStreetMap data. If you want to have the latest trail information on your device, install the newest version of the map file on your device regularly. Installing a new version of the map file is done the same way as the first installation described below, the only difference being that you don't need to save any old "gmapsupp.img" file (or gmapbmap.img), since the old MTB map file is being replaced with a newer version.

Installation instructions

  1. Download the *.img map file from the links below for the area you need the map for.
  2. Connect your Garmin device to your computer with a suitable cable. With the Mac and Windows file management apps you can view and handle the device's file system on most Garmin devices, but at least the newest Garmin devices require the use of the "Android File Transfer" or the newer "OpenMTP" app on a Mac.
  3. Check the GARMIN directory on your device to see whether there is more than one *.img file there. If there is, your device supports several maps at once. If there is only one file named "gmapsupp.img", your device only supports one map at a time. In that case, copy the "gmapsupp.img" file on the device to your computer to keep it safe. Note that on some Edge devices the file is named "gmapbmap.img" instead — in that case follow the same instructions as above and below, only the file name is different.
  4. If your device supported several maps at once: copy the map file you downloaded from the links below into the GARMIN directory as it is. If your device only supports one map, first rename the map file to "gmapsupp.img" before transferring it to your device (and you did remember to copy the original one somewhere safe first — be careful that the new and the old don't get mixed up now that they have the same name!).
  5. Disconnect the device from the cables, first selecting "eject" in your computer's user interface if needed.
  6. If your Garmin device only supports one map at a time, the MTB trail map should be in use automatically when you restart the Garmin after copying the file. If your device supports several maps, the MTB trail map probably needs to be activated from the device's menu first (e.g. the "map information" item in the "map" menu) — read the Garmin user manual for more detailed instructions.

Downloadable normal *.img map files

Note that at least Mac computers and the Chrome browser warn when downloading the map files that they may damage your computer. This is because the map files' *.img extension is the same as that of Mac disk images, which can be used to spread malware if the user opens that file type on their machine. In the case of the map files there is no such risk, because there is no need to open them on the computer, only to copy them onto the Garmin device.
