This article answers common questions about the app.
Automatic routing routes according to the routing profile you have selected (e.g. "gravel"), looking for the shortest route that respects the restrictions and weightings set by the profile. The "On foot / MTB most direct" profile draws the route in the most direct way of all.
One common problem with automatic routing is that it refuses to use a particular road or trail. What's happening is that the routing profile doesn't allow that way to be used — for example, access on it is prohibited. Note that the properties of ways come from OpenStreetMap map data, which may have gaps or errors.
Sometimes the problem is that there are no trails on the map in a given area and you still want the route to go there.
For both problems, it's worth switching automatic routing off for a moment by unticking "Follow roads and trails" in the left sidebar (on a phone you get to it via the gear button in the bottom left corner): the route line is then a straight line between the waypoints.
You'll find more route planning guidance behind this YouTube link: Trailmap Suomi guide videos.
Changing the route's name when saving doesn't automatically make a copy of it, because a route's identifier isn't its name but the number code attached to it. You can still save the route as a new one: in the Save dialog, change the name first and then choose the "Create new" button at the bottom.
You can also make a copy of a route by choosing the "copy" function on the route card or on the route detail page. The "Copy" function is in the "..." menu.
With the email & password option you can change your password or reset a forgotten one on the "sign in" page: right at the bottom of the page there's a "Forgot your password?" button. Note that this button is only visible when you're signed out. So if you want to change your password, sign out first.
The cause is often some kind of ad-blocking app (e.g. a browser extension) or security software (e.g. F-Secure) that is a little too eager to block the Trailmap app's sign-in features. In a browser, the sign-in features in the heading above often open a separate window (a popup), and if that gets blocked, signing in won't work.
If you sign in to the app for the first time on an Apple device using the "Sign in with Apple" option, a user account is created for you with your Apple ID. If you have previously chosen "Hide My Email" on your Apple device, registration happens with an app-specific email address created by Apple — this lets you use Trailmap, but it does bring some extra hassle with it (as it does in every app that uses this Apple method...).
If you take out a Plus subscription in the web version, you need to use the email address Apple created for you in the Stripe payment service. Here's how to find it: 1) Open Apple's "Settings" app, 2) at the top of it, open the "Apple ID etc." option, 3) choose "Sign in with Apple" from the list, 4) from the list that opens, choose "Trailmap", and 5) on the page that then opens you'll see your app-specific email address, which is of the form xxxx@privaterelay.appleid.com (xxx being some combination of letters and numbers).
Sometimes a subscription doesn't show up when you've bought it on one device and then use the Trailmap app on another. In that case, do the following: First check that you're signed in to the same user account (i.e. the same email address) as the one you made the purchase with. If the account is the same, sign out and straight back in again: this refreshes the subscription details.
The most common reason a subscription doesn't show up is accidentally creating and using several user accounts by signing in different ways.
A purchase made in an app store can easily be moved to another user account too: sign in with the account you want on the mobile app, on the device you made the purchase with. Then go to settings --> account details --> subscription details and press the "restore your purchases" button.
If you end your Plus subscription, the free version's limits take effect: you can only use a maximum of 3 routes and tracks, and no custom maps. Your routes, tracks and maps ("user content") do all stay safe in Trailmap's database. When you renew your Plus subscription, you get access to everything you've created again.
